Pile - up studies in dislocation - based single crystal gradient plasticity
نویسنده
چکیده
/department of mechanical engineering Introduction In plastic deformations, which arise due to the motion of dislocations in crystalline microstructure, size effects cannot be neglected at a small scales of observation. Within each grain of a polycrystal, the grain boundaries act as natural obstacles to dislocation motion. Due to the stresses dislocations exert onto each other, dislocations will pileup against the grain boundaries as illustrated in Figure 1.

Field Dislocation Mechanics with Applications in Atomic, Mesoscopic and Tectonic Scale Problems
This thesis consists of two parts. The first part explores a 2-d edge dislocation model to demonstrate characteristics of Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM) in modeling single and collective behavior of individual dislocations. The second work explores the possibility of modelling adiabatic shear bands propagation within the timespace averaged framework of Mesoscopic Field Dislocation Mechanics ...
متن کاملOperation of a 3D Frank–Read source in a stress gradient and implications for size-dependent plasticity
The operation of a single Frank–Read (FR) source in the presence of a spatial stress gradient is studied using 3D discrete-dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations and analytic models. Under a sufficiently large stress gradient, the FR source shows a new stable configuration controlled by the low-stress region of the graded stress field. Successive emissions from the source generate a growing dis...
متن کاملConsideration of different hardening mechanisms in a higher-order crystal plasticity theory
It is well known that size effects are present in plasticity with the observation that smaller being the stronger. This effect is attributed to the presence of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs). The hardening associated to GNDs can be separated in two groups: energetic and dissipative. The fi rst is associated with defect energy and different defi nitions for it are possible. In all c...
متن کاملThe role of back stress in sub-50 nm Si nanocubes
Article history: Received 11 November 2015 Received in revised form 2 December 2015 Accepted 3 December 2015 Available online xxxx Development of more accurate descriptions of dislocation motion requires understanding the actual effective stress driving it. Back stresses from dislocation pile-ups can work against the applied stress resulting in lower stresses acting on moving dislocations. This...
متن کاملMesoscale model of plasticity
A framework for investigating plasticity phenomena and their dependence on the underlying physical and size-dependent mechanisms is developed. The framework is based on crystal plasticity and three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics analyses. Particularly, the mesoscale model couples continuum crystal plasticity framework with a set of spatio-temporal evolution equations for dislocation ...
